The Perils of Wearing Skinny Jeans

Wearing Skinny Jeans can Cause the Loss of Leg Sensation

May 24, 2009 Paulomi Patel

Jeans have been a cause of many health hazards. The latest controversy suggests that Skinny Jeans can make the wearer go completely numb in her thighs.

Sky-high heels, super-sized sunglasses, short-shorts, Mohawks for hairstyles… the list goes on. Fashion is infamous for what it can get people to do, or wear. Jeans have been a cause of many health hazards – they have been the reason for impotency in men and yeast-related infections in women. And now, if news is to be believed, then it’s going to have some new serious effects health-wise, (as if there have not been examples of that in the past!). And the latest contributors to the infamy are the Skinnies, or for those uninitiated in the common fashion terms, the Skinny Jeans. Apparently, you can forget you have legs if you’re wearing them too tight!

Meralgia Paresthetica

According to bizarre reports, women wearing skinny jeans have felt a numbing sensation in their thighs. It’s an odd, tingly sensation that almost makes the wearer feel as if she is floating because she can’t feel her legs below her. Researchers call this peculiar condition Meralgia Parethetica. While we can all be blamed for having our own fashion horror-stories, this experience of suddenly feeling like you’ve left your legs behind may just mean going a bit too far.

Cause of Numb Legs

Studies suggest that Meralgia Parethetica can occur when constant pressure cuts off the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, causing a numb, tingling or burning sensation along the thigh. This femoral cutaneous nerve runs from the outside of the pelvis and through the thigh and is primarily a sensory nerve whose job is to sense or feel. In the case of some people this nerve has a tendency to be compressed by external pressure, especially when there is excessive pressure. Anything that may be tight, like the Skinny Jeans, could play a part in compressing this nerve. The result? A numbing sensation.

Aggravating Tingly Thighs

Now, if the Skinnies were not doing enough harm, there is cause for the effects to be further aggravated. This happens when women combine Skinnies with stilettos. According to Dr. William Madosky, a chiropractic physician in Richmond Heights, Mo., the high heels tend to push the pelvis forward which puts further pressure on the sensory nerve.

Prolonged Damage

Now if you’re one of those Skinny Jeans maniacs and can’t bear the thought of having to give up on all those slim beauties hanging in your closet, here is the good news. Doctors say that the Meralgia Parethetica condition is not permanent. There in no long term damage caused and once the pressure is taken off, that tingly sensation will be gone as the nerve regenerates. So if you experience one of those sudden tingles, all you need to do is switch to roomier bottoms. Of course, you may be able to do that only when you find your legs again!
