The P90X system developed by Tony Horton, professional trainer, is a total fitness plan including 12 extreme training routines and a low-fat, high protien nutrition plan.

Tony Horton, the much sought after BeachBody trainer, developed the P90X system (2007) after the initial sucess of his Power 90 (1999) in-home boot camp videos. There are key factors to P90X, including the 13-week physical fitness program and nutrition plan, designed to help asist you in losing weight and building a toned body.

The Workouts

P90X features 12 demanding and comprehensive workouts designed to target specific body areas and fitness objectives. They use what Tony calls the "muscle confusion" technique. The body is not given the opportunity to plateau because new routines are constantly being introduced into the assigned programs. There are three configurations of the 90 day program to choose from depending on your individual goals: classic, double, and lean versions.

  • Chest & Back
  • Plyometrics
  • Shoulders & Arms
  • Yoga X
  • Legs & Back
  • Kenpo X
  • X Stretch
  • Core Synergystics
  • Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps
  • Back & Biceps
  • Cardio X
  • Ab Ripper X

Recommended Equipment

In order to get the most out of these workouts, training equipment is suggested by Tony and used in the majority of the workouts. This includes: pull-up bar, resistance bands, dumbells, good quality mat, yoga blocks, and a heart rate monitor.

If you do not have or cannot afford all of this equipment, Tony provides alternatives to the movements in order to fit the client's needs. It all goes back to the current condition of the trainee, how far along he is in the program, and what goals he wishes to meet which determines what equipment will be necessary. Bare essentials include a yoga mat and resistance bands, which can both be found in local stores for a fairly inexpensive price.

Nutrition Plan

Carrie Wiatt, nutrition and diet expert, developed the P90X nutrition plan saying that "diet and exercise go hand-in-hand" in order to "have long-lasting results." The plan is designed to increase stamina and maximize the metabolism by focusing on foods high in protein and contain complex carbohydrates, while avoiding high fat intake. Wiatt explains that the first part of the diet is "clean-up," allowing you to get in the mindset of replacing bad habits. There are sample grocery lists, suggested portion sizes, and simple recipes provided for the trainee once enrolled in the program. A supplement system is also recommended in order to fill the gaps found in regular dieting alone. Supplements in the P90X system include multi-vitamins, recovery drinks, and high-performance bars.

Three Phases of the Nutrition Plan:

  1. Fat Shredder
  2. Energy Booster
  3. Endurance Maximizer

Starting this Program

It is recommended that any prospective trainee of the P90X system take a "Fit Test" before he begins. This test is designed to establish current physical levels and ensure safety. There is also a free support group called Team Beachbody for P90X trainees at milliondollarbody.com.
